"Guide to Military Space Programs" by R. Whelan (1984) discusses the DSCS
satellite program. The earth terminals that control these satellites were
      located at:

      Fort Detrick, MD
      Northwest, VA
      Sunnyvale, CA
      Fort Meade, MD
      Camp Roberts, CA
      Hawaii
      Landstuhl, Germany
      Clark AFB, Philippines

Does anyone know a better description of the location in "Northwest, VA"?

        Mark,

"Northwest" is actually the name of a town located - believe it or not - in
        southeastern VA!

It's in Chesapeake County, about 20 mi. south of Norfolk, just above the
        VA/NC line.

Actually Chesapeake is a city, not a county. Northwest is home to
Navy amd USCG communications stations. The south perimeter of the
          base is the state line.
