While visiting Hatteras Light i stopped by the USCG Station nearby to
see if anything remained from the former Naval Facility on the site;1-
2 old wooden buildings remain, but the SOSUS building "T" is gone;a
retired coastie verified the cover mission back in the 1960's
      was "oceanagraphic research".

NAVFAC Hatteras made the 1st SOSUS detection of a Soviet sub in 1962.

The data was transmitted via encrypted telegraph (circuits GT or
GBxxxxx) on a VFCT system, 931F Buxton(the local serving office)-
Norfolk;and then on to Warrenton Training Center via 931F Norfolk-
      Brandy Station(the local serving office).
