OT: GETTING MILITARY TECHNICAL REPORTS ON COLDWARCOMMS TOPICS
      By Michael Ravnitzky , mikerav@...

You can get a bibliography of military technical and historical reports on
any of the various topics of interest to the coldwarcomms group. Examples
      include:

microwave, coaxial and fiber optic communications networks, AT&T networks,
AT&T Long Lines, microwave radio repeaters, bunkers, L-Carrier, TD/TH
Microwave Network, Greenbrier, Project Greek Island, ELF, SIAS, Project
Sanguine, TACAMO, SLFCS, GWEN, MEECN, ERCS, AUTOVON, etc. etc.

Just choose a specific topic and keywords, and send the following letter:

      Defense Technical Information Center (DTIC-R)
      ATTN: FOIA Requester Service Center
      8725 John J. Kingman Road, Suite 0944
      Ft. Belvoir, VA 22060-6218
      Phone: (703) 767-9194
      FAX: (703) 767-9201
      foia@...

      Sirs:

I request these records under the provisions of the Freedom of Information
Act: a technical report database bibliography (all years) for the following
      keywords:

      XXXXXXXX or XXXXXXXXX

Please search your computerized Technical Report database for this request.

This is a noncommercial individual request. It falls into the ALL OTHER
REQUESTERS fee category. I agree to pay statutory fees, but please notify
me if fees are expected to exceed $30.

      Sincerely,

It takes about three or four weeks to get the resulting bibliography, but
once you get the bibliography, you can ask for some of the reports listed
      therein.

Less keywords are better in any one letter, but you can describe alternative
versions of the same idea, or an acronym and the full name. For example:

      AUTOVON or AUTOMATIC VOICE NETWORK

GWEN OR GROUND WAVE EMERGENCY NETWORK OR AN/URC-117

      =====

NOTE: You can also request a search of the older manual catalogue cards,
which contains material from the 1920s through the late 1950s. However,
DTIC charges search fees for a search of this type. It can get pricey.
However, if you are a journalist, you can ask to be put into the fee
category of news media requester, and then you can ask for the older manual
catalogue cards to be searched in addition to the computerized Technical
Report index. Journalists are not charged for search fees.
