We were part of 22,000 people at the gates of Fort Benning last weekend. Again a wonderful experience, but this time offering us hope. We were delighted with the fact that the young people are taking over. Many, perhaps most of them, were from Jesuit colleges and universities and their enthusiasm and energy were contagious. But even more important was the fact that we learned how the SOA Watch leaders have visited various Latin American countries and persuaded three of them so far (Venezuela, Uruguay, and Argentina) to stop sending soldiers to SOA. More will follow their example. One of the things that apparently impressed the governments of these countries was the information and the showing of videos of the thousands who gather year after year at Fort Benning, and even more, the number of people who have spent time in prison for doing so. They were amazed that Americans cared enough about their people to do that, especially those who went to prison. So all the demonstations and especially all those who endured prison have been worth it!
So we say a special prayer of thanks this Thanksgiving for SOAWatch. What a wonderfu way to reach out to our brothers and sisters in Latin America.
