October 30, 2005
This past Wednesday, thousands of CODEPINK members participated in vigils and protests to renew the call for peace after the death of the 2,000th soldier in Iraq. Now there is another opportunity for CODEPINK members to speak out against violence perpetrated in our name by attending the School of the Americas protest and vigil in Ft. Benning, GA.
For almost 60 years, the School of the Americas (SOA/WHINSEC) has trained over 60,000 Latin American soldiers in tactics that are used to wage war against their own people. Hundreds of thousands of Latin Americans have been tortured, raped, assassinated, "disappeared," massacred and forced to become refugees by those trained at the SOA/WHINSEC. Among those targeted by SOA/WHINSEC graduates are educators, union organizers, religious workers, student leaders and others who work for human rights.
Whether you have attended the SOA protest before or this is your first time, join CODEPINK co-founder Medea Benjamin and many other CODEPINK members at Ft. Benning, Georgia this Nov. 18-20 and help us build a powerful pink presence at the gates! We will gather together as CODEPINK Women for Peace before every major event so we can walk in solidarity as women speaking out against violence and war. There will be many opportunities for non-violence trainings, teach-ins and prayer, as well as the chance to hear Medea Benjamin speak during the rally on Saturday Nov. 19th at 3:00 p.m. at the main rally site in front of the gates of Ft. Benning.
Last year there were 16,000 attendees, and this year there are expected to be even more. Past participants have called the School of the Americas protest a life-changing, spirit-renewing experience that every peace-minded person should attend at least once in her life. CODEPINK wants to help make this your year!
WHAT YOU CAN DO
- Join us at Ft. Benning and volunteer to help when you're there (more details on the website).
- If you live in the Columbus, GA area, offer housing to out-of-town CODEPINK members
- If you are unable to come to Ft. Benning, tell your Congressional representative to cosponsor Rep. Jim McGovern's (D-MA) bill HR 1217 which would "investigate and suspend the SOA/WHINSEC." For more information on legislative action pertaining to SOA, please click here.
If you have other questions about logistics, please contact Emily at emilys@... or (607) 227-9731.
For detailed information about the history of the protest, legal aid and more, please visit the website of SOA Watch, the incredible organization founded in 1990 with the purpose of closing the school: www.soaw.org.
Let's close the SOA and change oppressive U.S. foreign policy!
