Student and community members of Gainesville demand that Congressman Cliff Stearns denounce the actions of Israel on May 31 against the Freedom Flotilla.
On May 31st the Gaza Freedom Flotilla, an international aid project, was attacked by Israel using air and navel forces. This resulted in the death of at least 10 and the wounding of as many as 50 aid workers. Furkan Dogan, a 19 year old US citizen was among the casualties. This attack took place in international waters, and as such is in violation of international law. The fate of those taken captive and the names of all those injured or dead have not been released by Israel.
The purpose of the Flotilla was to bring aid to Gaza, which has been in the stranglehold of an Israeli blockade for 3 years. Hundreds of people have died as a result of the limited resources and medical care available because of this blockade. The Flotilla consisted of 750 individuals from more than 40 countries traveling on 7 ships and carrying over 10,000 tons of relief supplies. This cargo included building materials to rebuild over 6,400 Palestinian homes that have been destroyed in the last 17 months in Gaza.
Footage supplied from Israel claims to provide evidence to vindicate the soldiers. This footage has been highly edited, spliced together, and lacks many time/date stamps. The US government has asked for an international investigation to be lead by Israel. This is both inadequate and inappropriate.
The global community, with few exceptions, has banded together to denounce these actions. Spain, Sweden and Greece summoned Israeli ambassadors to their capitals to demand explanations. NATO and the UN have both demanded the immediate release of prisoners and an open and transparent investigation. A myriad of religious and political leaders have called for Israel to be prosecuted in international courts.
Thus far Congressman Cliff Stearns has yet to make an official statement about this incident. We would like to urge him in denouncing the actions of Israel against the Freedom Flotilla as barbaric, shameful and criminal.
