Thanks to all of you who have responded with suggestions and ideas
for an action. There's a few things to throw into the mix. Please
feel free to send your comments to me or post at the firstname.lastname@example.org
Here seems to be the most exciting, coherent ideas so far: In
no particular order of importance:
WHO: We are an ad-hoc group of individuals
from all walks of life, all faiths, coming together to pay tribute to and mourn
the loss of 2000 U.S. soldiers who have died in the Iraq war and
occupation. We also mourn the loss of innocent Iraqis, especially the
thousands of children. We want the U.S.-led occupation of Iraq to end now
and U.S. troops to come home now.
WHAT: Upon announcement of the 2000th soldier
being killed (1958 as of today) We will hold signs and rally at the corner
of NW 13th Street and University Avenue, Gainesville, Florida, beginning
at 4:30 p.m. and then walk down to the National Guard recruitment office a NW
4th Avenue and 13th Street at 6:30 p.m. At the National Guard Recruitment
office we will light 2000 candles and read the names of the dead U.S.
WE NEED VOLUNTEERS TO READ SOME NAMES AND WE
NEED CANDLES. Please volunteer now!!
WHEN: When the call to action comes from
UFPJ, other national groups, upon announcement of the 2000th dead
soldier. Should be within a few weeks. I am sending you a FPJ flyer
under separate cover.
WHERE: Start at 13th and University, walk up
to Northwest 4th Avenue and 13th St. to National Guard recruitment office.
We mourn the loss of life and grieve for the families who have
had to bury their children in war.
We are sad as well as angry that 2000 U.S. soldiers and over 11,000
Iraqi civilians (mostly women and children) have died in this war.
We are angry that the U.S. government has lied to us about the
Iraq invasion, war and occupation.
We are angry that the U.S. military recruitment system lies to young
people about enlistment.
We are angry that the U.S. is building 14 permanent military bases
We are angry that the U.S. #1 export is weapons of war.
We demand military recruiters tell our children the truth
We demand an end to the U.S. occupation of Iraq now.
We want our troops home now.
DRAFT PRESS RELEASE:
An ad-hoc group of individuals from all walks of life, all faiths,
will join together to pay tribute to the 2000 U.S. soldiers killed in the Iraq
war by rallying at 13th Street and University when the 2000th U.S. soldier
is killed in Iraq. The rally will begin at 4:30 p.m. We will walk to
the National Guard recruitment office at NW 13th Street and 4th Avenue
at 6:30 p.m. At the military recruitment office we will read the names
of the 2000 dead soldiers as well as light candles.
We want the Florida National Guard to return to Florida
immediately. We need them here at home. We want military recruiters
to tell the truth to our children. We want all the U.S. troops to come
home now. End the U.S. occupation of Iraq. End the
SOME MISCELLANEOUS STUFF:
Many people said they want part of the event to be solemn.
People have suggested wearing black. People think we should have 2000 of
something: yellow ribbons, gold stars, candles -- BUT WHAT CAN WE GET 2000
of????? Can you please, please, make a sign or two??
The Community Plaza is still an option; but there is
reserving, or not??, and police? or not?? Folks seem to be leaning
toward actions at the recruitment offices or elected representative
Raging Grannies in Tucson, Az went into the recruitment office and
tried to enlist and were arrested; charges later dismissed. Go to http://arizona.indymedia.org/news/2005/07/28573.php
to read their statement of purpose, their action, photos, press release,
statement. Is anyone interested in the direction action aspect of
this by going in to "enlist"???? The grannies were arrested for
trespassing, charges later dismissed; they got great press. The age is
18-39 to be considered, the recruitment office open from 8 a.m. to 9 p.m.
