Group Description

Paddle Steamers - Turbine Steamers; Steam or Diesel powered: You will find them all here! This group is for all those interested in the Steamers of the Clyde, Loch Lomond and Western Isles of Scotland. Covering the history, the companies and the ships. From the first Paddle Steamer, Henry Bell’s “Comet” of 1812, the first commercial Turbine Steamer, "King Edward" of 1901, through "The Golden Age" of Railway Steamers to the “Waverley” and the modern car ferries. Discuss the world-famous shipyards of the Clyde and the men who worked in them. The proud marine and maritime traditions manifest from Glasgow and Greenock to all points in between. Covering too, the present day Clyde and Hebridean operations of Cal-Mac (Caledonian MacBrayne) and other Scottish ship and ferry companies. I was tempted to call the group “Doon the Watter” however, upon reflection I realised no one, with the possible exception of Glaswegian enthusiasts, would have found it on the listings page. Meanwhile I’m away to “See the Engines” and reminisce about Rothesay, Millport, Largs, Dunoon, Ayr, Tighnabruaich, Oban, Stornoway, Arran, Barra, Iona, Skye...

" From the lone shieling of the misty island
Mountains divide us, and the waste of seas -
Yet still the blood is strong, the heart is Highland,
And we in dreams behold the Hebrides."
