        Sean,

Carol may have other reasons, but for me personally it just makes abalone diving that much less efficient.

I generally take day trips up for abalone and rarely spend the night anymore.  That still kills a whole day with a 3.5 hour drive each way, cleaning gear, etc.  Burning up 12 hours of time, plus gas and food, for only 2 abalone starts to make it a very expensive endeavor.  If the bag limit is dropped to two per day I will go less often.

If the only goal is to reduce the pressure on the population, dropping the bag limit may be the best answer.  If you're also trying to preserve the sport itself and look at the needs of abalone divers then other measures may be better.  I believe another goal of DFG is to help support the local economy on the north coast.  Abalone divers bring in a fair amount of tourist dollars for local stores, restaurants, campgrounds, and the like.

I'm a diver, not a rock picker, so they may have a different viewpoint.  I would personally rather see them increase the size restriction from 7" to 8", or maybe even 9".  They can reduce the annual bag limit from 24 to 18 or 12.  They can close additional months.  DFG proposed restricting  take prior to 8:00 am.  DFG has statistics regarding the effects of these other proposals and they could reach their goals while still maintaining the daily bag limit of 3.  There are other ways to address the problem.

I'm sure people will complain about the other proposals.  Those who can barely find 7" abalone will complain about increasing the size limit.  A larger size limit also means people need new gauges.  When reducing the season, others will complain that a certain month is the traditional time for their get together.  Businesses and property managers may complain that they have just eliminated another month of business for them.  That same group might complain that reducing the annual bag limit will mean less diver days of business.

I would argue that reducing the daily bag limit will decrease the number of diver days, people will just come less.  I run into divers from all over, Sacramento, Chico, San jose, Fresno, it's a long trip for these people.  Will they make the trip for 2 abalone?  I don't know, but for me the trip will be made less often.

            Sean,

Carol may have other reasons, but for me personally it just makes abalone diving that much less efficient.

              Hi Carol -

Can you tell me why it is a bad idea to limit the daily take to 2 abalone instead of three?

              Thanks,

              Sean

I agree with the responses that you have said.  I will draft a letter for NorCal Skin Divers using your draft.

Below are the address that I pulled from the letter.  Should we send letters to these addresses and who should they be sent attention to:

I’ve been out of town, but have just studied and summarized what is being proposed along with that I believe is Cen-Cal’s stance.  This is attached.  I’d like some verification before I put this out to the general membership.

                    Larry

this thing is awful to read; IF, and I repeat IF, I read it correctly, the Commission is recommending:

                    1) closing Ft Ross until April 2016
                    2) reducing limit from 3 to 2 - damn and hell! (my comments not DFW!)
                    3) and reducing annual take from 24 to something??

We  need to fight the 3 to 2 limit so everyone write letters to Commission members - if I have read this correctly, Larry would you please contact clubs on your list.

Bear you too!!! get NorCal to write letters!!

in letters: support reduction BUT not daily bag limit
maybe suggest alternates?? close April or November?? reduce Sonoma Cnty yearly/annual limit.
