Brothers K (Book I) Spoiler
- Well, it's April 1st and I thought I would get an
early start on this huge novel.

Book I is an
introduction of the main characters:

Fyodor: Father
(dirty old man). Mentally cruel to everyone he meets.
Enjoys embarrassing himself and everyone else in his
company.

Dmitri (Mitya): eldest son; former soldier; profligate;
quick tempered; wants money from father; mother is
father's first wife.

Ivan: middle son; intellect;
atheist; writer; (still waters run deep); mother is
father's second wife.

Alexey (Alyosha): youngest
son; innocent; warm heart; monk-to-be; mother is
father's second wife.

You should also know that
Miusov (an aristocrat)is the cousin of Fyodor's first
wife and therefore concerned about Dmitri. He hates
Fyodor. Also, Father Zossima is a "head elder" at the
local monastery and is taken care of by Alyosha. These
two characters are important in Book II.

You
should know why there is going to be a meeting of all
the characters at Father Zossima's monastery (Book II
is totally about this meeting).

Question (I
don't know the answer): Fyodor's first wife was named
Adelaida Ivanovna, his second wife was named Sofya
Ivanovna, and later (Book II) we hear that Dmitri's fiancee
is named Katrina Ivanovna. Why are all these women
named Ivanovna?

If you've got the characters
figured out, you will be ready for Book II.

Any
other comments or questions are well appreciated.
- In the introduction, I read that Henry James
prepared the "New York Edition" which was a collection of
his best works. Washington Square was not included.
The book was popular but he didn't think much of it.
Is this a book of any quality? I guess it is a bit
like a soap opera. Whatever its merit, I enjoyed it.
It was also quick to read and gave me time to
explore other books.
