Group Description

This group is a celebration of the greatest popular song recordings, songs, and artists, from all genres and time periods from 1889 to today. It is being launched as an adjunct to my forthcoming books for Scarecrow Press, "The Encyclopedia of Great Popular Song Recordings," Volumes 1 and 2. The books feature essays on slightly over 1,000 great pop song recordings over the past 120-plus years.
From John Philip Sousa marches, Victorian-era parlor ballads and Scott Joplin rags, to the jazz of Louis Armstrong, Duke Ellington, Dizzy Gillespie, and Miles Davis; the blues of Bessie Smith, Robert Johnson, and Howlin' Wolf; the country and bluegrass music of the Carter Family, Bill Monroe, and Johnny Cash; the Great American Songbook of the Gershwins, Richard Rodgers, and Cole Porter; the classic vocal stylings of Frank Sinatra, Ella Fitzgerald, and Tony Bennett; the folk artistry of Leadbelly, Woody Guthrie and Pete Seeger; the gospel of Blind Willie Johnson, Mahalia Jackson, and Sister Rosetta Tharpe; the ethnic/world music of Amede Ardoin, Tito Puente and Bob Marley; the soul of Louis Jordan, Ray Charles, and Aretha Franklin; the rock & roll of Elvis Presley, Chuck Berry, the Rolling Stones (our current cover image), and Bruce Springsteen; and finally to the contemporary-era sounds of Eminem, Green Day, and Arcade Fire: my books cover them all, and so will this group.
In addition to essays and lists, I hope the group can launch into lively discussions and debates covering the entire gamut of pop music. We can discuss the greatest songs of every decade and musical genre, the greatest artists, guilty favorites, favorite musical memories, and more. With more than 120 years of pop music recordings as a background, there's plenty to talk about.
