      Johnston knew that even with Pemberton's troops, to slug it out with Grant would be futile.  He ordered Pemberton to join him but Pemberton chose to listen to Davis, although Johnston was his immediate superior.  I blame Davis for the lost of Pemberton's army ; for trying to play God and Napoleon all rolled up in one having the genius not to make any battlefield decision mistakes.

      By having Pemberton link up with Johnston, the combined forces could create more havoc to disturb the Union troops.
