On May 12th, 1864, Confederate forces left their stronghold at Dalton Georgia and moved by a road out of sight of Union forces to Resaca. This was a result of Union forces under McPherson moving on Resaca via Snake Creek Gap. It was the first of several strategic withdrawls made by Johnston to prevent being flanked by Sherman's forces between Dalton and Atlanta.
