      The article claims that Halleck ordered Hovey to strike at Grenada from the rear, thus causing Pemberton to abandon his line of defense and fall back halfway to Vicksburg. Actually, it was Grant that authorized Sherman to request cooperation from Curtis' department. Steele, then temporarily in command, agreed and ordered Hovey to undertake the mission. Halleck was actually quite miffed, Hovey's men having been designated as part of the as yet unannounced Chickasaw Bayou expedition.
