      Becuase McClernand was a 'Friend of Abe', Grant was forced to put up
      with him far beyond what he would have otherwise done. Grant
      considered firing him several times, but only acted when completely
      frustrated and sure that he would be supported by the administration.
      Even then, McClernand got Abe to return him to duty a few months later.
