      You might want to find the book "The Civil War in the American West," By
      Alvin Josephy. It's very broad scope, not a lot of detail but it's readable and
      well researched. Covers the Western campaigns chronologically, sort of.
      Starts with Native uprisings in Minnesota and covers the fighting in MO, TX,
      CO, and NM. He also covers the Red River campaign, much of the fighting in
      LA and AK. If it happened in the trans-Mississippi it's covered.
