RE: [civilwarwest] Re: and the point is?
Badeau did provide significant assistance to Grant in composing the memoirs. After word of this leaked to the press, inaccurately stating that Badeau was actually writing the memoir, he and Grant had a falling out over money and ultimately Grant published a letter stating that he alone was writing the memoirs. Grant wrote to Badeau that he was no longer needed and that he was “too petulant and demanded too much” .

Despite what some may say, Grant did write them with out assistance and it is a remarkable work. In history Grant’s Memoirs are regarded as a classic work. Honest as well. Don’t let detractors sway you away from that remarkable work. Read and enjoy writing at its finest. There is a reason for Grant’s memoirs being re-published over and over again for more than a century now. He wrote them, there was no help, he was accurate, and has a remarkable simple yet direct style that makes it more readable than most. He does not neglect detail nor accuracy, but it is his memoirs so I’m sure there is a lack of self critical appraisal but that should be expected from any ones memoirs. However, Grant’s seems less so than most. He attempts to explain why such actions were taken and if they failed he tries to explain why with out ripping people unfairly.
· So, don’t let detractors drive you from the Memoirs every written.
