Brigader General Thomas B. Smith at Nashville
- Was there ever an investigation of the actions of Union Col. William
McMillian on the second day of Nashville, December 16, 1864?
If there was, what was the outcome?
I have read from several sources that McMillian struck Brig. Gen.
Smith, C.S.A. in the head multiple times with his sword after Smith
had surrendered and was being marched to the rear. Smith was not
resisting or attempting escape.
The blows caused significant brian damage and Smith, who was only 26
at the time, lived the remainder of his life (47 years) at the
Tennessee State Hospital for the Insane. He died in 1923.
