      Esteemed group,

I believe the designation "Army of Georgia" was not made official till April 1865.  Up to that point, 14th & 20th Army Corps were known as "Detachment, Army of the Cumberland."  There are several letters in documentary edition of Sherman's letters (ed. by Brooks Simpson, I think) refer to General Thomas' efforts to get both corps transferred back to the AotC.  General Sherman pressed for a creation of the "Army of Georgia" to blunt Thomas, and to elevate General Slocum to permanent army command.  I do not have the volume in my office, if anyone need the citations, please let me know.

      Regards,
      Bill
