Over 80 years after the end of the Civil War, President Truman's mother did not want to stay in the Lincoln bedroom while visiting her son at the White House.  The first President elected from a xonfederate state post-CW was LBJ in 1964.  Since then it seems that about half of the Presidents have come from these states (Carter, Bush I, Clinton, and Bush II).
