McClernand leading the Vicksburg Campaign
- Somewhere back a few I believe someone stated that McClernand was
slated to head the Vicksburg Campaign [I haven't found the post]. The
threads have taken off in all kinds of directions since then, sort of
leaving behind the question: how close did this come to happening?
What if Grant had no support in moving to take charge, became ill, got
ordered elsewhere, or whatever? What might have come of McClernand in
charge? Would Halleck have really stood for it?
