IMO Steve, Davis's correspondence with Hood and Hood's correspondence with Davis behind Johnston's back is one scenario I would consider meddling. Johnston was commander of the Western theater and Pemberton was one of his immediate subordinates, yet Davis interjects his authority and orders Pemberton what to do directly rather than ordering Johnston what his desires were about Vicksburg. These are two situations where one could say that Davis meddled. IMO also, Davis should have removed Bragg when many of Bragg's subordinates requested his removal. Although this was not the case of meddling, it was a case of either favoritism or weakness on Davis's part.
