      As slow as Halleck was to move forward, would he have been just as slow to retreat? Or even understand how to conduct a retreat in prompt order? A good question.

      I've often wondered how he would have behaved had he had to fight a
      battle. he didn't move very fast but he did move.
      could/would he have had the gumption to actually attack?

      one wonders how he would have fared vs lee who lived to exploit the
      mental weakness of his opponents.

      and seeing how it was the western campaigns that destroyed the CSA
      might the war have lasted until 1870?
