Group Description

The May 2001 deal by Citigroup to purchase Banamex of Mexico raises important public policy issues.

This site is a clearinghouse for information relevant to Citigroup's advance on Latin America, and Mexico.

It also archives published information regarding Citigroup, its subsidiaries, and drug money laundering.

"Citibank buys Banamex. Both institutions have been linked to facts in which the powers of money and politics have mixed: The foreign bank, in relation with the financial maneuvers of Raul Salinas de Gortari; The Mexican bank, for the accusations (above all in the daily Por Esto, of Yucatan) that the properties of Roberto Hernandez, friend of Zedillo and of Fox, have been used for drug trafficking operations. Now, the two institutions unite in pompous matrimony."

-- Julio Hernandez Lopez
La Jornada
Mexico City, May 18, 2001

This datacenter on the Citibank-Banamex marriage is related to the Drug War on Trial case underway in New York City, in which Banamex has sued The Narco News Bulletin and journalists Mario Menéndez and Al Giordano for speaking and publishing the truth.

Upon completion of the sale, Citigroup will have to decide whether to continue with this frivolous lawsuit against freedom of the press.

This group is a companion research tool to the AkinGumpDataDump, a clearinghouse of information about Akin, Gump, Strauss, Hauer & Feld, LLP, América's most mercenary lawyer-lobbyist firm (and registered lobbyist for Citigroup subsidiary Travelers Insurance).
