Georgia Cornell, 80, of Herrin, died Saturday, April 6, 2013, at Century Assisted Living in Carbondale, surrounded by her family.
A funeral Mass will be held at 10:00 a.m., Monday, April 8, 2013, at Our Lady of Mt. Carmel Catholic Church in Herrin, with Msgr. Kenneth Schaefer officiating. Burial will be at Jefferson Barracks National Cemetery in St. Louis at 1:15 p.m., Tuesday, April 9, 2013, with Fr. Mark Reyling officiating. Visitation will be from 6:00 to 8:00 p.m., Sunday, April 7, 2013, at Riggin-Pillatsch & Burke Funeral Home in Carterville, with a Rosary service at 7:30 p.m.
Georgia was born on December 30, 1932, in St. Louis, the daughter of Estelle (McDonald) and Herbert Friss. She married Larry Cornell on February 7, 1959, in St. Louis, and he preceded her in death on April 19, 1993.
Georgia was a loving wife and mother and a professional volunteer for most of her adult life.
She was an active member of St. George Catholic Church, St. Louis, as a Sunday school teacher, a member of the parish council and Family Life Committee.
Upon moving to southern Illinois, she attended Our Lady of Mt. Carmel in Herrin and then Church of the Holy Spirit in Carterville, where she helped found the "Recycled Teenagers", a senior citizens group.
She was a volunteer with the Girl Scouts of America for over 30 years, a volunteer at Herrin Hospital, a member of SIH's Senior Advantage, and a tutor at John A. Logan College's GED program.
She is survived by her son, David Cornell of Cincinnati, Ohio; daughter and son-in-law, Diane and Jeff Goffinet of Carterville; grandchildren, Aaron and Xander Goffinet; and her niece, Marina Caruso of Fountain Valley, California.
Georgia was preceded in death by her parents and brother, J. Richard Friss of San Francisco, California.
Memorial contributions may be made to the Church of the Holy Spirit, 300 N. Pine Street, Carterville, IL 62918 or to Our Lady of Mt. Carmel Catholic Church Youth Ministry Program, 316 W. Monroe Street, Herrin, IL 62948. Envelopes will also be available at the funeral home.
