Is there a possibility that you are validating to a different XHTML DTD
this time, compared to the pages you have validated previously?

now, but the more verbose option works fine as well.
I've never noticed inconsistancy with the validator, but I agree that
the errors are hard to understand sometimes.
I wrote a little tute not that long ago to explain some of the messages.
