Russian Helicopter Crash Kills Three In Chechnya

      March 16, 2013

An Mi-8 helicopter belonging to Russia's Border Service has crashed in the North Caucasus republic of Chechnya, killing three of the four people on board.

A spokesman for the prosecutor's office of Russia's Southern Military District said the helicopter crashed and burst into flames while attempting to land in poor weather at Chechnya's Khankala military airfield.

The fourth passenger has been hospitalized.

Prosecutors have opened an investigation into the crash and are trying to determine whether the incident was caused by equipment failure or violations of flight-safety rules.

It's a common occurrence that military helicopters always "crash" but are never shot down - officially. N.S.

According to Chechenpress, the helicopter, which belonged to the FSB, was hit by Resistance forces between Bamut and Arshty. It tried to return to the Russian base at Hankala but crashed there.
The fighting in the mentioned area (concealed by the Russian media) started on 15 March, when Resistance troops attacked a Russian elite squad. The Russians fired their artillery at the supposed location of the Resistance fighters for about an hour.
