MOSCOW, January 1 (RIA Novosti)
A criminal case has been launched into the murder of the acting head of the criminal investigations unit in the volatile North Caucasus region of Dagestan, the Russian Investigative Committee said on Saturday.
According to the investigation, at approximately 2:00 a.m. local time [23:00 GMT], an unidentified man dragged the law enforcer out of his home in the village of Untsukul and shot him dead. The police official died at the scene from gunshot wounds.
An investigation into the murder is underway.
According to the National Anti-Terrorist Committee, more than half of all terrorist attacks in the North Caucasus in 2010 have occurred in Dagestan.
