June 08 2010
Two gunmen were killed in a shootout with law enforcement forces in
Russia's restive North Caucasus republic of Ingushetia Tuesday.
The gunmen opened fire at police after they were asked to pull over.
One of the killed was Umar Sakalov, who allegedly masterminded recent
bomb attacks in North Caucasus and supplied weapons to terrorists.
Sakalov was also leader of a criminal gang that produced explosives
and bombs. According to the RIA Novosti news agency, the gang planned to
carry out terrorist attacks on the upcoming national holiday on June 9.
Their deaths followed the murder of a judge Monday night in the
neighboring republic of Dagestan. The murder was under investigation.
