      THE WEEK IN BRIEF (May 29 - June 4)
      May 29 - A secret prison, until recently run by a special police
      (OMON) unit from Russia's Khanty-Mansiysk region, was discovered in
      Grozny.

      May 30 - The pro-guerrilla website Kavkaz-Center announced that in
      April and May Chechen warlord and Vice-Premier of the government of
      the Chechen Republic of Ichkeria Shamil Basayev visited the North
      Caucasus republics of Karachayevo-Cherkessia, Kabardino-Balkaria,
      North Ossetia, Ingushetia, Daghestan, and Chechnya and held meetings
      with local guerrilla commanders.

      May 30 - In an interview with the Russian daily Komsomolskaya pravda,
      Ramzan Kadyrov called for a large-scale security operation throughout
      the North Caucasus, including Ingushetia, Daghestan,
      Kabardino-Balkaria, and Karachayevo-Cherkessia.

      May 31 - Two or three fighters of the "Siddik" jamaat (guerrilla
      group) and a policeman died in a security operation in the village of
      Nesterovskaya in Ingushetiya's Sunzhensky district. According to the
      Russian NGO Memorial, security forces summarily executed a civilian
      from the house where the guerrillas hid.

      June 1 - Ingushetian Health Minister Magomed Aliskhanov came under
      fire in his car in Ingushetia's Nazran.

      June 1 - Alu Alkhanov, the Moscow-backed Chechen President, visited
      the Council of Europe in Paris. He stated that the conflict in
      Chechnya "has been resolved".

      June 2 - Russia's Federation Council removed Vladimir Ustinov from the
      post of Prosecutor General at the formal request of Russian President
      Vladimir Putin to whom Ustinov submitted his resignation. No reason
      for the resignation was announced.

      June 4 - Two security officials died in Nazran when guerrillas opened
      fire at their car.

      2) UPCOMING EVENTS

      June 4-5 - St Petersburg (Russia): The Council of Europe's
      Commissioner for Human Rights, Thomas Hammarberg, will participate in
      the annual Round Table of the Russian regional ombudsmen.

      June 13 - Moscow (Russia): A Caucasus music and dance concert.

      Trapped in Azerbaijan (by Azer Azizbekov, June 4)
      In the absence of legal recognition from the local government, the
      Chechens are entirely dependent on help from their relatives abroad
      plus a handful of programs carried out by various humanitarian agencies.
