The Foreign Office has protested to Russia about the deportation of
a leading British human rights lawyer on his way to observe the
politically sensitive trial of Stanislav Dmitrievsky, a director of
      the Society for Russian-Chechen Friendship.
The decision to detain Professor Bill Bowring at Moscow's
Sheremetyevo airport and then expel him has raised fears that
contacts with other Russian civil liberties groups may also be
      targeted.

Professor Bowring, who served as an adviser to the Department for
International Development and whose wife is Russian, was stopped on
      November 15.
