TWO MILITANTS ELIMINATED IN COURSE OF DETAINING OPERATION IN CHECHNYA

GROZNY, January 1, (RIA Novosti) - In the capital of Chechnya, Grozny,
one operative of the Federal Security Service died and further five
were wounded in the course of an operation to detain militants, a
source in Chechnya's Interior Ministry told RIA Novosti.

"On the day before, at 4:00 p.m., in the Staropromyslovsky district of
Grozny, in the course of a special operation to detain them, members
of an illegal armed formation put up armed resistance," the agency's
      source said.

He said that as a result, an FSB operative was killed, and five others
      were injured and hospitalised.

"By return fire, two militants were killed, their identities are being
established," the agency's source indicated. The source also said that
a Kalashnikov rifle, a grenade and ten rounds of ammunition of 5.45 mm
calibre were found on the scene of action.

The killed militants belonged to the bandit group of so-called "Grozny
emir" Mashugov, who was liquidated in December.

Militants suspected of planning New Year terrorist attacks destroyed
      in Grozny

KHANKALA. Jan 1 (Interfax) - Two militants have been destroyed in
Grozny who are believed to have been close aides of the so-called emir
of Grozny Alikhan Mashugov killed several days ago, Interfax was told
at the regional headquarters of the anti-terrorist operation in the
      North Caucasus Saturday morning.

"On Friday night law enforcers were tipped off that members of the
Mashugov group were staying in Staropromyslovsky district. The house
where the militants had been discovered was surrounded. When they were
told to lay down arms and surrender the militants offered armed
resistance. Two of them were killed in the exchange of fire. They have
not been reliably identified yet," a spokesman for the headquarters, said.

One of them was carrying the documents of a police officer, but there
are reasons to suspect that the documents were fabricated. The other
liquidated militant was a young woman who may have been a suicide
bomber or may have been involved in the training of suicide bombers.

Several law enforcers were injured in the operation but their lives
are out of danger now after receiving the necessary medical assistance.

Detectives and investigators are working at the scene. Steps are taken
to establish the accomplices of the militants.
