Russia promises support for citizens convicted in Qatar
MOSCOW. June 30 (Interfax) - The Russian authorities will do
everything possible to help two Russians who were sentenced to life
imprisonment in Qatar on Wednesday for assassinating Chechen
separatist leader Zelimkhan Yandarbiyev, Russian presidential adviser
Aslambek Aslakhanov told Interfax.
"We will not give up on them," Aslakhanov said.
"Russia will do everything possible to get the court to revise its
verdict. Russia will stand for every single citizen, no matter what
part of the world he is in," he said.
Referring to statements made by lawyers defending the Russians,
Aslakhanov said the prosecution did not have any evidence proving the
Russian citizens' role in Yandarbiyev's murder.
Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov told journalists earlier today
that "Moscow still believes the two Russian citizens had nothing to
do with Yandarbiyev's assassination. In compliance with Qatar's
judicial regulations, our lawyers will appeal the court's ruling."
