Georgia to Hand Over 8 Chechens to Russia

(Tbilisi, Civil Georgia, October 7, 2002) - After the meeting with
his Georgian counterpart, Russian President Vladimer Putin said that
Eduard Shevardnadze assured him Georgia would hand over all the
Chechens, allegedly militants, which remain in detention in Tbilisi.

On October 4 Georgia has already extradited 5 Chechens out of 13,
arrested by the Georgia border guard in August. 8 of them still
remain in preliminary detention in the Georgian capital. Russia
      demands their extradition as well.

Georgia's public defender Nana Devdariani criticized the decision on
extradition, saying that the legal side of the issue fell victim of
      the politics.
