Troops Battle With Rebels
The Associated Press VLADIKAVKAZ, North Ossetia -- Troops clashed
with Chechen rebels in two villages south of Grozny as warplanes and
artillery struck at rebel targets throughout the republic, an
official said Monday.
Federal forces and rebels engaged in sporadic shootouts in the
village of Gansalchu in the Nozhai-Yurt district over the previous 24
hours, the official in the Moscow-backed administration said on
condition of anonymity.
At the same time, military aircraft and artillery bombed rebel
positions in the village about 60 kilometers southeast of the

rebels also suffered losses, though it was not clear how many.
Earlier this week, military officials said they had surrounded a
group of rebels in Gansalchu who were attempting to break out.
Troops also clashed with rebels in the village of Bamut in the Achkoi-
Martan district, 25 kilometers southwest of Grozny, the official
said. One serviceman was killed and five others wounded. Three rebels
were killed and another detained during the battle.
