      Conference Objectives

      The objectives of the conference are:

      � To provide opportunities for sharing and discussion of the
      current status, trends, research, directions, issues and challenges on
      the role of information in developing a learning society.

      � To explore ways and means, and discuss various frameworks and
      reality-based scenarios to develop new models for the development of
      an information literate society.


      � To examine issues related to consolidating technology,
      information resources, knowledge and skills into strategic
      competencies in order to strengthen the role of information use in a
      learning society.


      � To foster cooperation and collaboration among stakeholders, to
      challenge, debate, learn and optimize the contribution of scholarly
      research, innovative programs and strategies to provide participants
      gain deeper understanding of the critical importance of information
      literacy and discover innovative ways and means of coping and dealing
      with these challenging opportunities and issues.

      Conference Theme

      The theme of the conference is

      Towards an Information Literate Society

      The theme allows for and encourages discussions on various issues and
      processes which explore the interwoven social, economic, historical
      and technological developments that influence the impact of
      information on society.


      The sub-themes include:

      � A Framework for Information Literacy in Today's World

      � Information Literacy Imperatives for the Learning Commons

      � An Information Literate Institution

      � Dimensions, Standards and Competencies for Information Literacy

      � Partnerships in Information Literacy

      � Professional Development for Information Literacy

      � Technology and Information Literacy

      � Research in Information Literacy

      � New Ideas and Innovations in Information Literacy

      � Directions for the Future
