It was Crowley, who really was (is?)  a great character.

So I buzzed through season 5, and then it took me over a year to get through s8 and into s9.  I was in mid s9 a year ago in January, and 1 year later, I am completely up to date (mid-s13)!   I watched from mid-s8 through mid-s13 (about 115 eps), in the past year.  More precisely, though, what happened was I got a really bad flu/bronchitis in mid-December, and watched the end of s9-current (about 90 eps) in 50 days! lol

Season 8 was very difficult, and season 9 started off slow, but ended well.  S10 was better.  S11  was actually the best season since s5.  S12 was ok, and s13 has gotten off to a decent start,  Look slike they will likely end this show with a shortened s14 that gets them so ep 300 (bringing it around to Cerebus relevance! lol), and then spin-off to a Yahweh-based version of the show with female leads (more Cerebus relevance!).

      whew!

Quite possibly, yes--there have been some good characters introduced post season five. Charlie, for sure. Maybe Garth? I know a lot of folk enjoy DJ Qualls in that role, though he seems a tad over the top to me. And there are several good individual episodes. It's more that the myth arcs just don't measure up (one season especially--eight maybe, or nine?--has some really dumb myth-arc stuff happening that alienated a lot of fans). And that after several seasons it's just hard to keep it fresh and not seem like the wheels are just spinning or we're seeing the same old same old again. Mind you, where do you go after the apocalypse? ;-)

yah..so my original plan was to just watch the first 5 seasons.  But I'm enjoying it much to much to stop after s5 (i'm about 5 eps in).  My friend who turned me onto it told me pretty much what you said - that there's still a lot of good stand alone episodes (in fact he told me his favorite character - I guess a humorous one? - wasn't even introduced until season 6 or 7).

Yes, Kripke left after season five--afaik, his only involvement since then has been as executive producer (which I think means basically cashing cheques rather than actually doing anyhting hands-on with the show). This season has had some very strong episodes so far, yes; something of a return to pre-season-five form. Jury's out on whether the momentum can hold, but things do seem somewhat promising.

That's what i've heard - i guess the creator Eric Kripke left after s5? Although I've also heard that the current season is the best one they've had in years - and in many ways in terms of the overall arc seems a direct followup to s5.

After season five, it gets pretty ... inconsistent--lots of good episodes, still, but proportionally more weak ones. But season five is probably the best season overall, so you still have some really good stuff before the decline begins.

Finally got around to watching this show.  It's great!  I've been burning through it- just finished the 4th season.  Oddly, I don't think I ever did watch that groundhogs day-like episode back then, but it WAS a great episode!

Looking forward to the next 7 seasons.  Hoping to catch up on time for the s12 premier in sept 2016!
