[CVBirds] chestnut-collared longspurs, etc.
- Dear Birders,
Andy Engilis reported both chestnut-collared and lapland longspurs
in the past week on the Valensin Ranch portion of the Cosumnes River
Preserve. Today I found 22 chestnut-collareds (no laps), two merlins
(one a _suckleyi_), at least two ferruginous hawks (one of these is
color-banded), and two short-eared owls (these before dawn) near Riley
Road and Dillard Road in southern Sacramento County. Take Dillard east
(actually northeast) off Highway 99 about 2 to 2.5 miles to Riley Road.
Turn right. After a short way going east, the road turns south. About
600 yards south of this turn, there is a house on the east side of the
road. Excepting the owls, all these birds were visible in fields west
of Riley from opposite the third telephone pole north of the house. The
merlins really kept the horned larks, meadowlarks, longspurs and
killdeers stirred up!
