      (5) LATINO GAY JOURNALIST SAM GALLEGOS recently signed a contract to use his
writing talents in an upcoming memoir of Mike Jones' well publicized
three-year gay relationship with the nationally known evangelist Ted
Haggard. The book will include never before revealed tales of Jones' ties to
Haggard and other men who seek intimacy in alternative places. The book will
be published in June 2007 by Seven Stories Press. A former editor of Out
Front Colorado and board member of La Gente Unida for several years, Sam had
been hoping to write a book for quite sometime. In the 1990s he did research
for a suggested book on the campaign that fought against the anti-gay
Amendment 2 in Colorado. A free-lance writer for several Latino and gay
publications, Sam was a researcher for Randy Shilts' well-known book titled
      And The Band Played On.

      (6) LATINO/A ACTIVISTS SPOKE OUT on the recent immigration raids, which took
place on a widely observed Mexicano religious day and were covered in a
recent extensive story by Cristina Fresquez, Managing Editor of the
Denver-based paper El Semanario. Quoted in the article were Latino and
Chicano groups such as Escuela Tlateloloco, Latinos Unidos, Coloradans for
Immigrant Rights, American Friends Service Committee, League of United Latin
American Citizens. Individuals quoted were long-time activists Erma Zamora,
Kenny Padilla, Tony Garcia, Belinda Garcia, former Colorado legislator Polly
Baca, Professor Luiz Torres, Yvonne Sandoval, Lisa Duran, Juana Rosa Cavero,
Azul Mares Del Grasso, Denver City Councilwoman Rosemary Rodriguez, U.S.
Senator Ken Salazar. Even Denver's Archbishop Charles Chaput spoke out on
the issue. Donaciano Martinez, a long-time Colorado activist and La Gente
Unida board secretary, was quoted in El Semanario's story as saying: "As
Chicanos, we need to stand in solidarity with the Mexicano undocumented
workers who are enticed to come here by white-owned companies. I refuse to
use the "i" word to describe undocumented workers. If the official arrest
statistics are correct, then immigration officials should be ashamed. They
note that out of a total of almost 1300 people arrested at all Swift plants,
only 65 were arrested for felonies. That's only 5% of their roundup and does
not justify disrupting people's family ties. As an elderly person who has
seen so many injustices in my long life, this latest raid once again exposes
U.S. power holders as continuing a John Wayne overkill approach to law
      enforcement."

      (7) "EATING OUT 2: SLOPPY SECONDS" is the title of a new gay film to be
shown Jan. 26 through Feb. 1 at the Starz Film Theater located in the
Tivioli building on the Auraria campus in Denver. The 90-minute movie
evolves around the gay character Kyle, who pretends to be straight as a
tactic of trying to pick up a male nude model named Troy. As the plot
thickens, Kyle ends up in a support group for ex-gays and gets a girlfriend.
Kyle's ex-boyfriend is horrified at Kyle's new hetero life and decides to
      pursue Troy.

      (10) THE IRS HAS NO LEGAL AUTHORITY to collect taxes on people's incomes,
according to Aaron Russo's well documented new film titled "America: Freedom
to Fascism." The film notes that powerful bankers took control of the U.S.
Govt. in 1913 during President Woodrow Wilson's administration, which
falsely claimed that the U.S. Constitution's Amendment 16 was ratified by
the states. The film points out that in that same year (1913) Congress
approved the Federal Reserve Act without the required process of amending
the Constitution. To this day, legal experts (including many IRS officials)
cannot locate any law for the IRS practice of collecting taxes from its
citizens. Even a 2003 federal Judge's ruling noted there is no historical or
current legal basis for the IRS. To view the two-hour film on the Internet,

      (11) Below is a recent poem by long-time Chicano activist and poet Joe
      Navarro.

IF THERE IS ANYTHING I COULD DO RIGHT

      by Joe Navarro

      If there is anything in

This world that I could do

Right, it would be being able

To help preserve a small piece

      of humanity from poverty, genocide,

      famine and cultural extinction.

It would be shedding off the

      Rotten stench of the industrial

      And post industrial embrace of

Pimping our mother, La Tierra and

      Rejecting the neo-liberalist, pro-imperialist

      anti-indigenous laws of social Darwinism.

I would take a moment to shake off my

      Comprehensive addictions to technological

      Conveniences that mutilate my human

Connection with the natural world and look

At La Tierra with the eyes of people

Who adore her with respect, praise and prayer.

      If there is anything in

This world that I could do

Right, it would be embracing a humble

      Practice, where I would self-sacrificingly

Endure hardships to preserve a tradition

That has survived the test of time.
I would decipher my convoluted dreams that

Are sung to me in time-honored voices accented with

Drumming of the heart-beats of my Ancestors,

Reminding me that our purpose on this Earth,

Our mother, is to preserve her, not destroy her.

I would awaken as a relative to all living creatures.

I would reach out to my sisters and brothers

Who persistently hold onto the future,

By honoring ancient times, and resist all pressures

To become extinct. In a simple act, for a precise

Moment in time, I would make a humble difference

That would preserve a people¹s way of life.
