Jotos del Barrio was originally presented at the Esperanza
Peace and Justice Center as a staged reading in 1996. Most
recently, the play completed a successful run at the Jump-Start
Theater - produced by San Antonio-based madmedia - where it
played to packed audiences and received critical acclaim. Now,
it returns home to the Esperanza for one encore performance.

Presented as a collection of poems, monologues and vignettes,
Jotos del Barrio explores the lives of young Latino, Chicano,
Tejano, Mexicano, and Mexican-American gay men as they
search for a voice, a sense of place, and above all, respect as
human beings. The play is a coming of age story about young
Chicanos and Latinos who discover the joys and trials of gay
identity – bailando en los bars, challenging discrimination at
      work, coming out to `ama y `apa...

Through dance, music and performance, San Antonio playwright
Jesus Alonzo explores the lives of characters confronted by
racism, homophobia and the complexities of Queer life.

Performer Maria Ibarra directs a multi-talented ensemble cast
that includes Anthony M. Flores, Miguel Pablo Gonzalez, Ricardo
      C. Galvan, Jesus Sifuentes, and Erica Salazar, aka Erica
      Andrews.

The people of Esperanza dream of a world where everyone has
civil rights and economic justice, where the environment is cared
for, where cultures are honored and communities are safe. The
Esperanza Center advocates for those wounded by domination
and inequality – women, people of color, lesbians and gay men,
the working class and poor. We believe in creating bridges
between people by exchanging ideas and educating and
empowering each other. We believe it is vital to share our
visions of hope... we are esperanza.
