      The Impact of Substance Use on the Brain and the Body

      Friday, October 5
      9:00am- 5:00pm
      Keynote Speaker:
      Jennifer Baity Carlin, LCSW
      Co-Occurring Disorders Specialist
      San Francisco Behavioral Health Center (SFBHC)

      Why do humans enjoy using drugs? What happens to our brains and our bodies
      when we do? In this course, attendees will learn the:

         ·  Impact of substance use on the brain, including:
         o  The involvement of neurotransmitters in why we enjoy and sometimes
         benefit from substance use
         o  How addiction occurs and why many addicts can’t ‘just’ quit
         o  Blackouts
         o  Memory loss and Dementia

         ·  Short-term and long-term effects and health consequences of drugs and
         alcohol, including:
         o  Intoxication
         o  Heavy Use
         o  Tolerance
         o  Withdrawal
         o  Diabetes
         o  HIV, Hepatitis B&C, and abscesses

         ·  Cultural Considerations: The differing effects of substances on:
         o  Men, Women, Adolescents, Adults and Older Adults
         o  People of different genetic/ethnic backgrounds

         ·  Treatment Implications of these issues

         * This seven hour course is appropriate for mental health and substance
         abuse clinicians of all levels of experience.
