JOB TITLE: MULTIPLE DIAGNOSIS SERVICE PROGRAM COUNSELOR
LOCATION: 890 HAYES (EAST), SAN FRANCISCO
Since 1969 when we first opened our doors as a local drug and alcohol treatment center, Walden House has evolved into a national leader in developing strategies to help addicts recover and maintain their lives. Today's Walden House helps treat more than 3,400 men, women, and children daily, offering the challenges, focus, and compassion necessary for people to change their lives and reach their full potential.
Walden House engages, heals, teaches, trains, houses, clothes and feeds people with alcohol and other drug addictions in San Francisco and throughout California. Often these people are the most difficult to reach: the mentally ill, people with AIDS, emotionally disturbed and abused adolescents, the socio-economically deprived and the homeless.

Responsible for caseload of HIV positive, drug addicted clients, many of whom also have mental health diagnosis. Helps clients detoxify from drugs. Once clients are stable, in conjunction with specialized staff, assesses clients� needs and, within 7 to 45 days, refers them to further treatment or discharge.
EDUCATION KNOWLEDGE AND SKILLS REQUIRED
� Must be a certified Alcohol/Drug Counselor. If not, must be registered for California Alcohol and Drug Certification with any of the State of California Department of Alcohol and Drug Programs (ADP) approved agencies within 6 months of hire. After registration, must obtain certification within 5 years.
� Knowledge of group process, group facilitation, and conflict resolution.
� Strong reading comprehension with ability to analyze complex information. Good writing skills with proper grammar, good spelling, and good handwriting.
� A clear understanding of and ability to demonstrate professional ethics, boundaries, and judgment.
� Strong verbal and interpersonal skills.
� Time management skills.
� Knowledge of stages of HIV, risk reduction techniques, and how HIV is transmitted.
� Knowledge of severe mental health disorders
� Ability to manage a diverse population.
� Knowledge of addiction and addictive process.
