I import most of my stuff, so far its been 3 EP's, 1 Nikon CP5000 & my LX200. I had already worked out the maths & even after import & shipment I saved over 1/3rd...crazy.

What is very offensive is a company who will remain nameless, are based in the UK . They ship to the US & the product is a 3rd cheaper over the pond than here. So even after they ship internationally it still costs less than in their own country.

Meade & the price monopoly in the UK is a good example. They don't seem to understand that it's simply a short term or low growth solution. Think of all the people who could not justify the cost & have left the hobby. The answer to high cost being 'specialised market' doesn't hold water when I can buy a wedge which costs £200 to make & sells for £500. I know these cost, because I work for a design house & my friend owns a CNC shop.

      .......rant over.

p.s just out of interest, what made you move to the UK. I'm asking because the US is looking rather inviting right now.

      Peter,

I'm a retired US type in the UK whose pension is in US $, so know well what
you mean. Monthly income has dropped by 30% in last few months due to
terrible exchange rate--but you know that.

Just FYI, if you haven't ordered astro gear from the US previously, you'll
pay 22.5% (17.5% VAT + 5% duty) on astronomy items. The gotcha is that you
pay that 22.5% on the value of the item plus shipment costs. It cost me
      over $7,000 to import a 12.5 RC/ST10XME/Paramount ME--more than the cost of
a completely new ST10XME. This year I simply could not have afforded
it. Quick math shows me that would cost over $14,000!!!
