      Sodium lights don’t so much cut light pollution (the lights are still there) as restrict it to a single, filterable wavelength. 

      (If the lights also are designed to limit upward emission, they will cut overall sky light pollution, however.)

      I'm surprised you have a severe light pollution problem. Many years ago, SJ changed all of its street lighting to sodium vapor lights to cut light pollution at the Lick Observatory which overlooks the city. Check with the staff at Lick and find out what filter they use to eliminate light pollution from SJ and you should be set for decent imaging.
