The corners, where illumination is weakest, are *lighter* than the center, opposite of what I would expect. Why? Is this an artifact of the original processing, which was with the contrast and lighter-darker settings in CCDOps?
      Were you by any chance using a focal reducer?.
      You can get an effect like this sometimes from these.
