Interview!
ICYMI Bradley Bell Interview
March 30, 2017 3:33PM
Soap Opera Digest: March 23 marks your big anniversary. Congratulations on 30 years! Does it feel like 30?
Bradley Bell: In some ways it feels like 30, and in other ways it feels like yesterday. It’s very satisfying and gratifying and most important, it’s still fun. It’s loads of fun every day, so as long as we’re having fun, we’re all in.
Digest: It was clever to revive the Spectras to time with the show’s 30th.
Bell: Thank you. For the 30th anniversary, one of my goals was to bring the show full circle and take the characters on the original cast call sheet, or from the first few years, and reinvent them and revive the institutions that made the show what it is — and we’ve come very close. We’ve got Spectras, Logans, Spencers and Forresters 30 years later. I’ve watched other shows sometimes veer off-track, as we have at times, but it feels good to have these characters front and center as we celebrate 30 years.
Digest: Speaking of compelling stories, the Ridge and Quinn dynamic is discovered this week, which is going to be a huge moment. What can you tease about what’s ahead for Brooke/Ridge/Quinn/Eric?
Bell: Well, I think Brooke and Ridge both burn very hot. They’re both characters driven by their passions and desires. They haven’t always made the right decisions, but I think that that’s what’s brought them together. They love that about the other one, but here it’s a step too far. Ridge is drawn to the desire that burns within Quinn — and he knows it’s bad, he knows it’s dark, but it’s also, in a way, irresistible. Giving in to this desire is completely wrong, and yet it still happens. The big question is if this is something Brooke and Ridge can survive, and in the end, we’re going to see if Ridge is Brooke’s great destiny, as we’ve heard so frequently throughout these 30 years, or is it someone else? Someone like Bill Spencer, who’s very dedicated and devoted in his desires and love for Brooke. So, it’s a big climax that we’re building to for the 30th, and I’m so excited to be working with Rena [Sofer, Quinn] and Thorsten [Kaye, Ridge] and [Katherine] Kelly [Lang, Brooke] and John [McCook, Eric] as they bring this thing to life.
Digest: Let’s talk about those early days working with your dad, Co-Creator William J. Bell. What were your first roles at B&B?
Bell: Well, before we started working on B&B in ’86, I was a dialogue writer for YOUNG AND RESTLESS and for years prior — every summer during school breaks — I was spending time with my dad and the Y&R writers.
Digest: So, you’ve always wanted to write?
Bell: I did. Early on in college, I wondered if I wanted to do other things, but it wasn’t long before I knew without question that this is what I wanted to do. Writing was a part of who I am.
Digest: Was it always part of the plan that you’d take over the show?
Bell: It reallyevolved. My dad basically said, “We need to write the best scripts we can.” We were all focused on making that next show, that next story arc, as good as it could possibly be. But, as I spent time with him every day at the office, and every evening with him viewing shows, and every morning driving to the studio with him, we shared so much time together that I had an opportunity to see his style and formulate my own style.
Digest: How was the transition? Did you feel pressure to do a great job?
Bell: Well, he would edit my scripts and he would take out his red pen and the early ones would come back almost more red than white [laughs]. But, he really cared andhe put in the time to teach me. He was writing both Y&R and B&B at the time, and he was just completely overwhelmed. He was working seven days a week, early in the morning till late at night. He would do Y&R Monday through Thursday, and then B&B Friday, Saturday, Sunday. He was burning out before our eyes and something had to happen. My mother insisted that he take a vacation. It was at that point I felt that I had the ability to write the show so while he was gone, I wrote ahead 10 or 12 episodes, and he came back and was furious! I said, “Well, the scripts are done and they’re going into production,” and he said, “You can’t do this!” and then he said, “All right, fine.” He wasn’t going to hand the show over because he was so passionate about it all but I grabbed it and ran with it, and it came at a time where he needed to lighten his workload.
Digest: What was the transition like?
Bell: He was keeping an eye on things but he was consumed with Y&R. He had the feeling that the stories were going well and the company was running well. It was an abrupt change but he had faith in me, and that was a wonderful feeling.
Digest: Did you ever have disagreements about the show?
Bell: When we were working together, we would have different opinions, and it would be passionate. We would have heated discussions but in the end, we had mutual respect and appreciated where the other was coming from. Of course, I was in awe of his story-telling ability. We knew when it wasn’t as good as it could be but when it was, he was just the master. He could bring such emotion out of the viewers and out of the actors. He really was a wizard.
Digest: Absolutely! Speaking of storytelling masters, your mom, Lee Phillip Bell, was a very important influence as co-creator. Does she still offer her input on B&B?
Bell: She does. We go to lunch every Tuesday, and it’s a business lunch. She watches the show every day and she has her favorite characters and favorite stories. She was a great influence early on, having done her talk show in Chicago for 30 years. She would tackle many social issues on her show, and she inspired Dad and myself to go that step further and tell stories with a social conscience and awareness. She’s always been about that. When we have these special shows, it comes from her.
Digest: Were there ever talks about taking B&B to an hour?
Bell: We’ve had discussions — and came somewhat close a decade or so ago — but it never really came to light. I love the half-hour format. We’re unique in the world to have a half-hour, ongoing daily drama. It’s fun to be one of a kind in the television landscape. It’s fast-paced. It’s a commitment but only half of an hour, which is great. I couldn’t be happier.
Digest: The downside of that, though, is you don’t get to feature as many characters. For instance, with the arrival of the Spectras, fans are worried about the Avants. Likewise, will Caroline ever come back? What do you say to viewers who are concerned about their favorite characters?
Bell: I am very committed to the Avant family. They’re incredible to the show and they’re going to continue to be a mainstay family. To work with Anna Maria [Horsford, Vivienne] and Obba Babatundé [Julius], they’re just amazing. Zende and Nicole are going to have a bright future. And in this case, we’ll see that the Spectra family is actually going to be good for the Avant family because there are going to be some interesting crossovers in the near future. With Caroline Spencer, if you look back in the history of the show, very often we tell stories that end with the birth of a child. That changes the dynamics of the character and the story. It was really a question of, at this point in time, did I want to play Thomas as a father all of the time? I really wanted to take the character in a different direction. He is a father, and he and Caroline share this child, and I suspect that we will be seeing Caroline back on the show in the future.
Digest: Speaking of crossovers, will we be seeing more B&B and Y&R crossovers?
Bell: Yes. It’s so great to have Sally [Sussman] and Kay [Alden] writing Y&R, two people that I’ve worked with ever since I can remember. Because of that, it’s very easy for us to communicate. We’ve had conversations, and there will be more between the shows. You can look forward to those.
Digest: Have any of your own children expressed an interest in following in your footsteps the way you followed in your dad’s?
Bell: We’ve been having conversations about that. My kids range from 23 to 14, and I know that one of them is going to get in this business. I’m going to insist upon it. It’s just such a special experience and I want to share it with at least one of my kids. I’m sure one will jump up — or if not, I’ll force them. Walk the plank [laughs]!
Digest: What would your father think of B&B today?
Bell: Well, since today is my dad’s 90th birthday, it’s incredible to think that if he were 90, it would be on the air now for a third of his life. It’s so far beyond our wildest imagination in 1987 that we would have this longevity and reach that we have around the world — and there’s still the enthusiasm we see and hear from our fans. It’s a wonderful thing. It’s a great success story that all started with the birthday boy, my dad.
Digest: Where do you see the show in the next 30 years?
Bell: I don’t know. I like the sense of adventure in the television landscape right now. Television is evolving in how it’s being broadcast and how it’s being consumed, and I think that makes it an exciting time for shows like ours. Television is very strong and there are a lot of options out there. The online viewing with CBS.com is very exciting. Happily, the networks continue to be strong, especially CBS. As the landscape continues to unfold, we’re very happy to be a part of it. I think it’s a new golden era of television, so it’s a great time. w

On April 2, 1956, viewers were introduced to the lives and loves of the people of Oakdale when AS THE WORLD TURNS made its debut on CBS. And for over six decades, the soap was beloved by its fans right up to the airing of its final episode on Sept. 17, 2010.Created by Irna Phillips, ATWT was one of the first soaps to air in 30-minute episodes, as the rest of the serials were all still 15 minutes in length. It was also the first CBS sudser to expand to 60 minutes in 1975. ATWT was the number one rated daytime drama from 1958 until 1978. Actors like Don Hastings (Bob), Helen Wagner (Nancy), and Eileen Fulton (Lisa) became huge stars, appearing for nearly the entire run of the series.
ATWT was also the launching pad for stars like Julianne Moore (Frannie/Sabrina), Meg Ryan (Betsy), and Marisa Tomei (Marcy). Supercouples like Bob and Kim, Lily and Holden, Jack and Carly, and Luke and Noah had legions of fans who would follow their ups and downs over the years.

Today at 10:24 amThe shocking truth is on the verge of being revealed in these spoilers from THE YOUNG & THE RESTLESS!
When Lily approaches her at the club, Juliet insists, “I just want to clarify, I didn’t force Cane to do anything.” Lily looks confused, clearly not knowing what she’s is talking about. Will Juliet divulge that she and Cane slept together that night in Tokyo, or will she realize she should keep her mouth shut? And even if she does, how much longer can the two of them keep their secret — if there's even a secret to tell! Could Juliet be lying about the whole thing just to get a job at Brash & Sassy?
Chelsea is taken aback by how quickly Chloe wants to race down the aisle with Kevin. “You know your dress isn’t finished, right?” she asks the bride-to-be. “So why the hurry all of a sudden?” How will Chloe explain her desperate move?
Meanwhile, Nick takes his suspicions to Paul, wanting to reopen the investigation into Adam’s death to find out the truth. “There’s something you’re not telling me, and I think it’s a name,” Paul muses. “Who do you think did this?” Nick just looks back, stone-faced. Will he give him Chloe’s name, or keep that part a secret? And without that crucial piece of information, is there anything Paul can do to help uncover the truth?

Daytime Emmys 2017: Heather Tom and Other B&B Nominees Speak Out! (EXCLUSIVE)
Mar 31, 2017 at 12:06 pmWhen the 2017 Daytime Emmy Award nominees were announced, THE BOLD & THE BEAUTIFUL racked up an impressive 23 nods for its talent both in front of and behind the camera. We asked B&B acting nominees Heather Tom (Katie), Scott Clifton (Liam), Pierson Fodé (Thomas), Anthony Turpel (R.J.), Anna Maria Horsford (Vivienne), and Monica Horan (Kieran) how it felt to be up for the honor!
Heather Tom (Katie)
Tom admits she was nervous being a guest on THE TALK when the CBS chat show announced the nominees live. “I generally don’t even like to know when the nominations are coming out,” she confesses to Soaps In Depth. “So there was really no avoiding it.”
Having won five Emmys in her daytime career, the Lead Actress nominee knows how to put together a reel, and chose a series of episodes that would showcase a variety of her skills. “I actually started with the stuff where Brooke comes out from under the bed,” Tom reports. “I felt like it was light and funny, but it still showed the problem. Then I went into scenes that showed more of the progression of what was really her nervous breakdown. We see that paranoia, hopefully, then we get to the other side of it where she realizes, ‘Okay, I’m not crazy, and I’m walking away from you two.’ That’s the progression I chose.”
Scott Clifton (Liam)
Clifton took home the Emmy for Outstanding Younger Actor in 2011 and Supporting Actor in 2013, but this is the first time that he submitted himself in the Lead category! “I was really pensive about doing ‘Lead Actor’,” he confides. “I don’t feel like a lead actor. I feel like a kid! But someone said, ‘Look, you can’t keep hiding behind supporting actor when they’re giving you lead storylines.’
“That was a couple of years ago,” he continues. “So I said, ‘Okay, I promise I won’t submit in supporting, but I’m not going to submit in lead until there’s something I’m really proud of.’ This year, the cabin storyline happened and that is my favorite storyline that I’ve had in my career. I love it. So I was really proud of that work. I had my fingers crossed that the reel felt like it had some sort of story to it.”
Now that he’s secured himself his first nomination in the leading category, the nerves are settling in! “I'm really beside myself,” Clifton admits. “This is not something that I expected, and it feels very surreal. I feel like a guppy in a shark pond! Like, ‘What am I doing here?’”
Pierson Fodé (Thomas)
The scenes where Thomas found out that Douglas was his son and absconded withthe infant to the cabin where Caroline had to come and calm him down earned Fodé his second nomination in the Younger Actor category. “They were great scenes,” he enthuses. “I, personally, am not a dad, so it was fun for me to talk to different parents to find out what they would do in a situation like that.”
The actor finds it amusing that both times he’s been nominated for a Daytime Emmy, he’s been in an unusual situation. “I was on a volcano the last time I found out,” he smiles, “and this time I was on a talk show on live television and they recorded my reactions. It was fun. I did a little jig and a dance. It was cool.”
Fodé already knows who his date will be on Emmy night — his parents! “There’s not a whole lot of things I force them to come to because they’re up in Washington state, and it costs money. We’re not exactly well-off up there, but I force them to come to this. It’s a great opportunity for me to get to spend some time with them.”
Anthony Turpel (R.J.)
Although Turpel only just began airing on the soap in September and already has netted himself a nod for Outstanding Younger Actor! “It’s super crazy and unexpected,” he gushes. “I watched it live and didn’t know it was coming. It’s such a cool feeling. I’ve been acting for six years, and I’ve worked hard to get here. Now all of this is coming at once, and it’s so cool. I wasn’t even on the show for last year’s Emmys. I’ve been here for about six months!”
The young star isn’t even sure which episodes earned him the nomination! “I didn’t even know I was submitted at first,” Turpel confides. “B&B did it, and I guess it was a good choice! I don’t even know what scenes they used. I think it might have been the scenes with Bill [early on].”
Anna Maria Horsford (Vivienne)
Last year, Horsford was nominated in the Guest Performer category but graduated to Supporting Actress this year thanks to her heartfelt performance when Vivienne learned that Sasha was her husband’s secret daughter.
“It was when they crushed Vivienne’s world,” she says of the episodes she submitted. “I tell you, the reaction I got from women everywhere after, they were like, ‘Come on, come on.’ Truth is so important to a human being, and I think the moment that got me was when she realized how much she had sacrificed and that it was all for a lie. I love the way they wrote it. They took time for me to heal, because you have to heal.”
Monica Horan (Kieran)
The episodes where Horan and Jim O’Heir played Quinn’s wacky seatmates on her flight to Monaco earned the actress a Guest Performer nomination, and she couldn’t have been more thrilled when B&B headwriter and executive producer Bradley Bell called her with the news! “I couldn’t believe it!” she admits. “But that’s how it felt here the very first time: Like family. I know I’m a newbie, but they treat everybody so graciously.”
Horan is familiar with Emmys because her husband, Philip Rosenthal took some home as the producer of EVERYBODY LOVES RAYMOND. “We’ve got some Emmys around the house,” she chuckles. “Actually, we put them away. They’re dangerous, you know — very sharp. You may get hurt!
Who Is Juliet on THE YOUNG & THE RESTLESS? — Meet Laur Allen!
Mar 31, 2017 at 2:25 pmCane’s life got a lot more complicated on THE YOUNG & THE RESTLESS after his trip to Tokyo introduced him to Juliet Helton. And now that she’s followed him back to Genoa City, fans are wondering about not only the mysterious Juliet but also her portrayer, Laur Allen!
On her website, Allen described her nationality as half-Chinese and half-European and relishes her dual nature. “Born to parents of opposite backgrounds, cultures, political views and religions,” she explained, “I was raised with an understanding and respect for the duality in everything.”
Allen fell in love with performing back in junior high school after playing a daisy in a production of Lewis Carroll’s Through the Looking-Glass. “As I stood in front of the whole school in my ill-fitted, partly spray-painted, larger than life foam headpiece,” she recalled, “I sold my soul to Hollywood.”
However, after graduating high school, Allen admitted she had to put her dreams of acting aside to try and pursue a “real” career, admitting: “So I engaged in a full-hearted rack focus back to my production aspirations, suppressed whatever daydreams I had conjured up about acting, and shipped off to university.”
However, after graduating from Vanderbilt University in Nashville, TN, Allen decided it was time to return to Los Angeles, where she found herself persuaded to enter the Miss Los Angeles Chinatown pageant. “To my surprise, I won,” she admitted. “As the first multi-ethnic queen in the pageant’s 47-year history, I was honored to be chosen as an ambassador for the Chinese community.”
Upon her return from Hong Kong, where she participated in the Miss Chinese International Pageant, Allen threw herself back into acting, appearing in some short films and digital series before making her daytime debut on Y&R. “Proud to be a part of it!” she declared on Instagram.
After Cane made a successful business deal for Brash & Sassy in Tokyo, Juliet took him out to celebrate, but when he got thoroughly sloshed, Cane woke up believing he’d slept with the young woman! Juliet has since followed Cane back to Genoa City and while she seems to be just looking for a job working at Brash & Sassy, there could still be a lot more to this woman than meets the eye, so stay tuned!
THE YOUNG & THE RESTLESS Casts Julie Chen — See Who She's Playing!
Mar 30, 2017 at 1:17 pmReality and fantasy will collide when Julie Chen appears as herself on THE YOUNG & THE RESTLESS on Wednesday, May 17!
The co-host of THE TALK, who also hosts the hit CBS summer reality series BIG BROTHER, is taping an episode of Y&R which will air during May Sweeps. According to Entertainment Weekly, Hilary travels to Los Angeles from Genoa City in the hopes of persuading Chen to appear on her newsmagazine show, GC Buzz.
“HIlary will stop at nothing to interview her idol, Julie Chen,” a Y&R spokesperson previews of the special appearance.
Other actors will join Mishael Morgan in the special episodes which will air the week of May 15, with Chen’s appearance scheduled for Wednesday. The role shouldn’t be a problem for Chen, who has appeared as herself in primetime series like MADAM SECRETARY, THE MILLERS, and SUPERGIRL! And we're sure we'll hear all about her experience in Genoa City on an upcoming episode of THE TALK!
Special guests are always showing up for visits in Genoa City, including Chen’s THE TALK co-host Sheryl Underwood, who played Justice of the Peace Clarice Collins. STAR TREK icon Nichelle Nichols appeared as Neil’s mother, Lucinda, for the soap’s 11,000th episode last year, and most recently, Eileen Davidson (Ashley) welcomed her REAL HOUSEWIVES OF BEVERLY HILLS castmate Erika Girardi back for another appearance as real estate agent Farrah.
