Group Description

Carl Schmitt was one of the best known crtics of political liberalism in the twentieth century. Schmitt was not only a political and legal theorist but an active participant in the constitutional debates of the Weimar Republic and in the 1932 legal proceedings that lead to the collapse of the Weimar Republic in 1933. In Germany and continental Europe Schmitt's concepts of political theology, the state of exception, the enemy, dictatorship and technicity earned him a reputation as one of the most important and controversial figures of political and legal theory of the previous century; however, in the English speaking world Schmitt has been relatively neglected until recently.

This list will concentrate on scholarly and intellectual discussion of Schmitt's work as a theoretician and activity as a jurist. Flaming, rude behavior, off topic chatter (not related to Schmitt) and personal attacks will not be permitted.
