Opportunity for a Ph.D. Student at the Virginia Institute of Marine Science
Ph.D. opportunity for a highly motivated student to pursue graduate courses and research in fisheries science at the Virginia Institute of Marine Science (VIMS) under the mentorship of Dr. Mary C. Fabrizio. Depending on the prospective student’s interest and available funding, research emphasis will be in one of two areas: (1) improving the accuracy of recruitment indices from long-term, fishery-independent surveys, or (2) exploration of habitat requirements of the juvenile stage of estuarine species such as Atlantic Croaker, Striped Bass, and invasive Blue Catfish.
Students must hold a Master’s degree in fisheries, marine science, biology, ecology, or similar field and have an interest in gaining strong quantitative skills. Computer programming skills, as well as evidence of scholarship (publications, presentations) are highly desirable. The School of Marine Science at VIMS will consider high-ranking applicants for a number of multi-year institutional fellowships that will include tuition, stipend and an allowance for health insurance. Dr. Fabrizio, who maintains a well-funded research program (http://www.vims.edu/people/fabrizio_mc) is committed to providing out-year support from her research program. Additional fellowships and small grants are also available annually to School of Marine Science students on a competitive basis.
Prospective students are encouraged to send a CV, transcripts, and a brief statement of research interests and career goals to www.vims.edu for further information).
