  • Good for you, David! Not all victories will be big ones...and chipping away at the monolith is also important. Now how many more people can you get to chip away with you? • And where do you get it? We have an alternative i.d. in the US too, but we still have to go through the Department of Motor Vehicles to get it. • If we didn't have much bigger battles to fight right now, I'd want to fight this one. I realize I can get an i.d. that's not a driver's license, but NYC is the only place I've heard that I don't have to go to DMV to get it. I just feel that this system says something deep-rooted and sick (in the car-dependent sense) about American society. On the bright side, I'm having lots of fun...

  • With a growing number of young people supposedly rejecting cars, why is it that the place to obtain the de facto form of government i.d. in the US is still the Department of Motor Vehicles? And when asking for i.d., people always ask for your driver's license? Our citizenship is subsumed under our car use?? And if anyone knows a way of getting a government i.d. without having to go...

  • I would certainly be happy to discuss this more. I'm doing well at convincing individual youth to get excited about the carfree cities option, but still don't know how to take it to a bigger level. One thing that seems to help is personalized letters sent to support a cause. But we'd have to know to whom to send them. Anyway, I hope to see more discussion and a gradual process to...

  • Has anyone else seen this? It's not perfect; among other things he seems to be about to tell how the streetcars disappears, then is stopped by the show's sponsors (?)...but for TV it's pretty good. (Sources are in the second link.) Wish I could figure out how to get either Michael Moore or John Oliver to take this issue on! Adam Ruins Everything S1E3 Adam Ruins Cars Adam Ruins...

  • Hi all. We've got lots of fun activities planned for this year's World Carfree Day in Dhaka. 18 Sept: create a parklet 20 Sept: group walk followed by press conference on carfree cities 22 Sept: outdoor activity (open street), for the first time with government involvement; planning lots of activities including drama, music, flash mob, games with people with disabilities...

  • I don't care if we close this and reopen a different one, as long as we do have a listserv... I'm recruiting people for the carfree cities cause, mostly at the moment in India and Bangladesh. Right now I'm doing it through We Squared (www.wesquared.club) but can of course bring interested people onto this list, once it gets reactivated. Thanks!! From: "Justin Hyatt vernichte.dein...

  • Hi all. What seems often to be missing from the road-rail debates I've heard (e.g. at Asian Development Bank) is how much more efficient train engines are than truck/bus, and the difference between steel wheels on tracks vs. rubber on asphalt... As I understand rail involves a much higher up-front investment and saves vast amounts over the lifespan...as well of course as saving so...
