  • Hi all. I showed the trailer to about 200 university students in Bangalore. They seemed intrigued...and more importantly, I hope to do a bunch more showings of the whole documentary in Bangladesh, including to the government group called Bangladesh Urban Forum, which has expressed a keen interest in carfree cities. !!! • It's a good article but my tendency is always to focus on the positive--I think in much of the US we're doing better, and I hope those positive trends will prevail. Heaven forbid Europe should follow down our path, though many cities in Asia and Africa are already a disaster, with the small car-owning minority making life miserable and dangerous for everyone else. Not only do we...

  • I've seen men in business suits on the skytrain in Bangkok...I can only assume they've realized it's the only way to avoid the traffic congestion! Still, to have Mastercard promote transit is something, even if it's bus not tram. --Debra From: "'J.H. • Hi all. Just to let you know that my book Beyond Apologies, Defining and Achieving an Economics of Wellbeing, is available for free download on various sites, including www.instituteofwellbeingbd.org, Scribd, ResearchGate, and Issuu.com. I talk a lot about transport in it. The point of the book is to help people counter the economic arguments that we always hear that slow us down...

  • Check THIS out re promoting cycling in India! I can't believe this is actually happening in India. Diu is a tiny town but gets a million tourists a year, so will be seen by LOTS of people. https://www.facebook.com/media/set/?set=a.690100421044501.1073741834.429926273728585 From: "Richard Risemberg rickrise@^$1 [CARFREE_CITIES]" To: urban-ecology@^$2; carfree_cities@^$3 Sent: Friday...

  • It depends how you define growth. If we were looking at growth of well-being rather than consumption, then obviously we could achieve it with less energy use. If we wish to continue seeing GDP grow, then we need to keep burning fuel despite the consequences (and likely impossibility). So it would be good if we agreed that we want growth in walking, cycling, public transit...

  • Hello dear Joel. Relieved to hear you're OK...and that Obama won!! Met a lovely woman today, I talked up WCN to her and asked her to join AND to ask you about writing an article on getting carfree sunday streets in 3 parts of Manila for you...I'm pretty sure her name is Marie Danielle V. Guillen, Ateneo de Manila University. I'll have to tell you later (or may write for SCN about...

  • Regarding Joel's point 3, may I add that reducing greenhouse gas emissions, rather than being economically disastrous (as Michael Lewis claims) could be enormously beneficial. Investing less in road and car infrastructure would free up vast resources for better public transit, as well as conditions for walking and cycling. Many of the necessary changes would be worth making even...

  • I was just in Minneapolis, cycled around the city, including on the Midtown Greenway, to get to restaurants, to the 'global village' (former Sears distribution center which now has a lot of restaurants, shops, a hospital, and apartments), and, yes, for the pure enjoyment of being on a bike in a safe and green place. And how exactly in a video does one distinguish between 'casual...

  • RAISE it? I thought you meant lower it! What planet do Americans live on, anyway? :) ----- Original Message ---- From: J.H.
