Natural Gas War 1.1.2006 - ?
Not sure how big this story is in North America... I just checked www.sfgate.com (where this story didnt seem to show up) and www.nytimes.com, and www.latimes.com, where it did, but was a bit down the list from the top international story...
Energy and the new world power play
The row between Russia and Ukraine over natural gas is the result of a powerful combination of world energy concerns and Russia's desire to exert its influence in its own back yard.
Ukraine gas row hits EU supplies
EU nations have started to feel the impact of Russia's axeing of gas supplies to Ukraine, as Moscow accused Kiev of stealing EU supplies
The natural gas issue in Europe is both a general one related to overall energy use and supplies and a more specific one in relation to transport as CNG-powered buses are becoming very popular in the cities. Even CNG locomotive development is starting here (a North American company, http://www.railpower.com/about.html, is one of the pioneers). Also, there were huge conversions in household heating in Central and Eastern Europe to natural gas in the nineties and even before this latest business in the ex-Soviet Union many people were reverting to wood and even coal heating due to the price of gas. Fortunately, some or perhaps many well-informed people (and their towns) in the regions are using the most efficient waste wood-based systems, but, in relation to securing Russian supplies a friend from a village who understands this all very well thought a speculative parody I wrote about Estonian cross country ski-commandos and Maltese mini-submariners seizing Gazprom
facilities and Putin himself was serious.
Nothing about all this yet on the Gazprom English site: http://www.gazprom.com/eng/index.shtml
Interesting one on that is the link to the North-European Gas Pipeline, which goes through the Baltic sea directly from Russia to Germany, controversially bypassing the Baltic countries and Poland.
